Psychedelic-Informed Therapy
Support for Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Clients

Psychedelics (or Entheogens) are medicines that, when used wisely and appropriately, can greatly aid in psychological, spiritual and relational growth and healing. Psychedelics can either be naturally occurring (e.g., psilocybin, ayahuasca) or man-made in a lab (e.g., MDMA, Ketamine, LSD), and are usually safe for therapeutic use and non-addictive. Unlike conventional psychiatric medications which are typically prescribed to be taken daily (perhaps even multiple times/day) for an indefinite length of time, when psychedelics are used therapeutically a client may only need a single session to do the psychological work they are aiming for. In other words, psychedelics work best as a medicine you take at a specific point in time with the intention of working on a particular struggle. Psychedelics are so effective in this way because of how they loosen (so to speak) the psychological structures of the mind, allowing the client to face and do more difficult work, that then, if properly integrated in follow-up sessions, can have positive, lasting effects.

Anything (including psychedelics and conventional psychiatric medications) can be used to escape/avoid, or to facilitate, our growth and healing. Much of what sets the therapeutic use of psychedelics apart from conventional mental health medications is how psychedelic-assisted therapy sessions are approached, beginning with the foundational preparation sessions (which help establish the intention, or mindset, for the psychedelic work, while establishing necessary connection and safety with the psychedelic guide), then having a suitable context (or setting) where the psychedelic-assisted therapy session takes place, and finally doing the essential integration sessions that follow in the days and weeks after (wherein the work of the psychedelic session is solidified into longterm changes). All of this is sometimes summed up in the phrase “Set and Setting.”

Though I currently do not offer Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy sessions (i.e., sessions where my clients are taking a psychedelic in-session), I do offer support and guidance for Preparation and Integration work for Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy sessions that clients choose to have elsewhere. As a client myself I have had a number of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy sessions, utilizing a variety of medicines (e.g., MDMA, psilocybin, cannabis, ketamine, 5-MeO-DMT), each of which has been transformative and healing for me. My growing personal experience as a recipient of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy, in conjunction with periodic training, etc., equips me to support clients in preparing for their psychedelic session (and helping them clarify what they are intending to work on) and with integrating the work they did in their psychedelic session to help solidify it into longterm change.

Disclaimer and Words of Caution

Precisely because psychedelics “loosen” the mind (which enables more difficult work to be accomplished) it is imperative that your guide be trustworthy and safe. You are in a very vulnerable state during your psychedelic session—only work with guides you trust!
