The Land of Repressed Emotion: How Did We Get Here?
“Is There a Cultural Bias to Avoiding Working Through Emotions? If so, Sean, where does that come from and how do we heal? Is this bias particularly true for men? Is Hollywood/Corporate Marketing to blame? Spaghetti western anti-heroes come to mind for me.
For further context, I grew up with the misconception that counseling or dealing with emotions is not something strong people do. I now realize the extreme folly in that thinking. However, I think this bias impacts me and the rest of our society in really profound ways. For example, if any emotions start to bubble up in me, there is an internal voice that says, “That isn’t strong so you must be broken!” So, the consequence is stuffing the emotion, or covering it up.
Your videos have helped me to begin to heal that ingrained thinking. However, I think it is deeply rooted. I wonder if you could talk on that topic as I think it might help myself and others to let go of some unhealthy thinking.
Further, if our cultural heroes are broken, can you suggest some positive examples of heroes or role models that exemplify wholeness?”
