What’s Underneath Your Depression?

Depression can be a very confusing, debilitating experience, in part because each person’s experience of depression is comprised of a variety of interacting elements. Difficult emotions such as shame, despair and overwhelming sadness often feature prominently, but may be driven by very different factors from person to person. Because of these tangled complexities I think it is important to think and speak in terms of having depressive symptoms, or having a diagnosis of depression, as opposed to just saying I/you have depression, end of story. We are more than a diagnosis! And precisely because the particular drivers of depression are going to be a unique mix for each person, we want to be thinking about how we can, with curiosity and compassion, help our self (or someone else struggling with depressive symptoms) to begin exploring and untangling those complexities, in order that we (or they) might have an opportunity to heal at the roots of the problem (instead of only treating the symptoms).
