This entry is part 1 of 3 in the series Why Parenting is Difficult.

Do you ever find yourself in situations with your child thinking, “Why is this so difficult?!?!” For something that is as old as creation (or nearly) you would think that by now we humans might have figured out a thing or two about parenting. And we have, sort of. It is just that there aren’t any tricks or magic formulas that can make parenting a breeze. There are things that can make parenting easier. This series will: explore some of the things that make parenting difficult; and offer directions that parents can pursue to help make parenting easier.

I don’t have any children yet. So I only know what it’s like to be a parent from the outside looking in. But I have been fortunate enough to walk alongside a lot of parents who have given me front row seats on their relationships with their children. The posts in this series are drawn from what I have learned through the experiences of my friends, family and clients, taken together with my training and my experiences working with children as a counselor (since 2006) and dance teacher (since 1998).

The bottom line is that parenting is hard because children need to be parented with love and wisdom but no parent can love perfectly or have perfect wisdom. We will never be perfect, but there are common things that make acting with love and wisdom harder. I will be exploring some of these common difficulties in the posts in this series. I have two goals for this series. I hope that parents will find some suggestions that point them in helpful directions. Perhaps more importantly, though, I hope that readers will find descriptions of some of the struggles they are having with their children and will be able to take some comfort in knowing that they are not alone. I’ve never met a parent who thought parenting was easy. Many find parenting to be rewarding but many also tell me it’s the hardest thing they have ever done.
